BIOGRAPHY
George Willems was born and raised in Curacao.
Growing up in a musical family (his late father Telmo Willems sang in
several orchestras), George at an early age began to show his talents
for singing.
As early as the age of 10 he began to
sing as a pupil of the Mgr. Niewindt elementary school in the Mundo
Nobo neighborhood, where he grew up.
It did not take long before, at the age
of 15, he joined "The Honeybees," a band of friends in the
neighborhood, and later "The Three Voices & Co." The latter
association introduced him to an artistic career that led to the most
spectacular achievement any local or Antillean artist has ever
realized:
The Best Interpreter in the 40th
edition of the Viña del Mar Festival in Chile, one of the most
prestigious festival in the world!
Describing George’s international career
is not difficult. He is the only local artist/singer who has ever sung
in the most famous international super clubs, theatres, hotels and
television programs: from Bangkok to Buenos Aires; from
Amsterdam to Caracas, and from the Bahamas to Iceland (Reykjavik).
On April 29, 2003 George
C. Willems became the first artist/singer to receive the decoration of
“Knight in the Order of Orange Nassau”, which the Queen of The
Netherlands (in this case Her Highness Queen Beatrix) awards to
members of the Antillean community who have made an exceptional
contribution in their respective fields.
George Willems is fluent in
eight languages including: English,
Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Dutch, Papiamentu, and Italian.
George also sings in Indonesian and Hebrew, but does not speak those
languages. |
